Selling homes is renowned as a very lucrative profession. Selling just a couple dozen average priced homes a year can easily yield a six figure income. But becoming a realtor is not as easy as filling out some paper work. In order to become a real estate agent you will have to apply for a real estate license. Obtaining a real estate license is mandatory in all states if you want to sell homes for a living. While the specific procedures for obtaining a license vary from state to state, actually obtaining the license is usually not difficult.

In most states the qualifications for applying for a real estate license are very, very minimal. In my state, for example, there are only four qualifications: you must be at least 19 years old, you can not have any prior felonies, you must be a legal resident of the US, and you must have a high school diploma or equivalent. If you meet these minimum qualifications then you can apply for your very own real estate license. Although professional training is not required, you will definitely want to enroll in a real estate training program before applying for a license.

Training classes are generally offered by community and specialty colleges. However, if you live in a rural area, real estate training classes may not be available in your area. Thanks to the power of the internet you can now take professional real estate classes from the comfort of your own home. Typically, most real estate training classes will last anywhere from six to twelve months and the fee is usually several thousand dollars not including the cost for books and other materials.

Real estate education classes usually teach things like real estate law, investing, elementary finance, property taxation, deeds, contracts, and mortgage options. If you can't afford to pay the thousands of dollars to enroll in professional classes you can actually just purchase books and teach yourself. But bear in mind that a professional instructor can help you identify what specific kinds of information will be required for the exam.

After you have completed your professional real estate training, you will then be required to complete the state exam. If you've done your homework and actually pass the state exam you will then need to complete several state approved training courses. The state approved courses are typically not very difficult to complete. Once the courses are completed you will officially be a certified real estate agent. After being certified you will usually want to complete an apprentice program with a local real estate agency. With enough dedication and hard work you could be pulling in six figures within a couple of years.
